Interlude I – The Still Ground

Phase 1: The Thinning I

It begins beneath her feet.

Not a tremor.
Not a fracture.

A listening.

The path is ordinary stone — weathered, pale, warmed by afternoon light. She has walked it a hundred times without thought.

Today it feels… aware.

She stops.

The stillness presses inward, subtle but insistent. Even the air seems to wait.

She crouches and places her palm flat against the surface.

Cool.

Unyielding.

Nothing.

Then —

A pulse.

Faint enough to doubt. Slow enough to mistake for imagination. A deep, measured rhythm sealed beneath layers of soil and memory.

It does not quicken.

It does not call.

It simply continues — ancient and patient — as though marking time that has nothing to do with her.

She pulls her hand away.

The sensation vanishes.

Birdsong resumes. Wind moves again. The world reassembles itself around the ordinary.

But she remains kneeling.

Because something below the visible has shifted its attention.

And it knows the weight of her footsteps.
